The husk is almost entirely dietary fibre – stir a teaspoon into a glass of water and within a minute it thickens into a soft gel. It has almost no taste, which is why it is one of the simplest ways to add fibre to your day, and a favourite binder in gluten-free and keto baking. How to take psyllium husk
Start with half to one teaspoon (about 5 g) stirred quickly into a large glass of water or juice, once a day, and drink it straight away before it thickens. Follow it with a second glass of water – psyllium must always be taken with plenty of liquid. Build up gradually to the amount on the pack. It also works stirred into porridge, yoghurt or a smoothie. Not suitable for children under 6. If you take prescription medication, ask your pharmacist about timing, because psyllium can slow the absorption of some medicines.
