What psyllium husk is
Psyllium is the husk of the seed of Plantago ovata, a plant grown mainly in India. The husk is almost entirely dietary fibre, which is why it behaves the way it does in a glass: stir in a teaspoon and within a minute the water thickens into a soft gel. Psyllium husk can hold many times its own weight in water. On its own it has almost no taste.
This one is certified organic and raw — the husks are simply ground, not heat treated — with no fillers, sugars or additives.

How to use it
Stir one teaspoon into a large glass of water, juice or a smoothie and drink it straight away, before it thickens. Follow it with a second glass of water. It also works in baking as a binder, which is why it turns up in a lot of gluten-free bread recipes.
Always take psyllium with plenty of liquid. If you are not used to fibre, start with half a teaspoon and build up slowly. Not suitable for children under 6. If you take prescription medication, ask your pharmacist about timing before you start.

Frequently asked questions
What does psyllium husk do?
Psyllium is a dietary fibre, and we can tell you that this product is high in fibre — that is a nutrition claim and it is allowed. What we cannot do is tell you what it will do for you: we checked the EU list of authorised health claims and psyllium is not on it, so no shop in the EU may claim an effect for it. If you have a specific health question, ask your doctor or pharmacist.
Husk or powder — what is the difference?
Same material. "Husk" usually means the flakes left whole, "powder" means the same husks milled finer. This one is finely ground, so it mixes into a drink more smoothly and is easier to bake with.
How much is a serving, and how long does the bag last?
A level teaspoon is roughly 5 g. At one teaspoon a day the 150 g bag lasts about a month, which works out at about €0.24 a day.
Can I bake with it?
Yes — it is one of the standard binders in gluten-free baking, where there is no gluten to hold the dough together. A teaspoon or two in a loaf is typical. It also thickens soups and sauces.
