Berberine is a yellow plant compound taken from the roots and bark of plants in the barberry family (Berberis). It is sold as a food supplement in capsules, usually 500mg or 1000mg of berberine HCl, or as a phytosome form (berberine bound to lecithin) at a lower dose. One honest note before you choose: berberine has no authorised health claim in the EU, so we do not describe what it does. We tell you what is in each capsule and how much it costs, and we leave the rest to you and your doctor or pharmacist.

How to choose
By dose. If you want the most berberine per capsule, Applied Nutrition gives 1000mg of berberine HCl. WeightWorld gives 500mg and is the cheapest per capsule, which matters if you plan to take it for months.
By form. Standard berberine HCl is the simple, well-known form. Phytosome berberine (Berbevis®) is berberine bound to lecithin; the dose per capsule is lower (500–550mg) and the price per capsule is higher. Power of Nature, Igennus and (in part) Natroceutics use this type. The makers say the phytosome form is absorbed better; we repeat that as the maker's description, not as a claim of our own.
With or without chromium. Natroceutics and Igennus add chromium picolinate. Chromium is a mineral with authorised EU claims: it contributes to normal macronutrient metabolism and to the maintenance of normal blood glucose levels. If that is what you are looking for, choose one of these two. The other three are berberine only.

Berberine FAQ
What is berberine? A plant compound (an alkaloid) found in barberry, goldenseal and Oregon grape. In supplements it is usually sold as berberine hydrochloride (HCl), a stable powder in capsules.
How much berberine is in one capsule? 500mg (WeightWorld, Power of Nature), 550mg phytosome (Igennus) or 1000mg (Applied Nutrition). Natroceutics prints the amount of each form on the label. Always follow the dose on the pack and do not take more.
What is berberine phytosome or Berbevis®? A patented form where berberine is bound to sunflower lecithin and pea protein (made by Indena). It is used in the Power of Nature and Igennus products.
Can I take berberine with my medication? Ask your doctor or pharmacist first. Berberine is known to interact with some medicines. Do not take it if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, and keep it away from children.
Is berberine vegan? WeightWorld is labelled vegan and Natroceutics uses a vegetable capsule. For the others, check the capsule type on each product page or label.
