Marine or bovine, powder or capsules?

• Marine collagen – from fish skin, mainly type I collagen. Applied Nutrition Marine Collagen, Beautyllagen sachets, and the WeightWorld tablets and capsules. Choose this if you avoid beef.
• Bovine collagen peptides – types I and III, the best value for a daily 10–20 g serving. Leap, Optimum Nutrition, Igennus and Applied Nutrition Collagen Peptides.
• Capsules and tablets – 1–2 g a day instead of 10–20 g. Convenient, but a much smaller dose than a powder; compare the grams per day on the label before you compare prices.
• With vitamin C – some formulas add vitamin C, which contributes to normal collagen formation for the normal function of skin, cartilage, bones and gums (EU-authorised claim). If yours does not, our vitamin C page has it separately.

How to take collagen

Unflavoured peptides are almost tasteless and dissolve in coffee, tea, smoothies or water – hot or cold. A typical serving is 10 g a day; follow the pack. Collagen is a protein, so it counts towards your daily protein intake, but it is not a complete protein (it is low in tryptophan), so it does not replace whey or a meal. A 300 g tub at 10 g a day lasts a month.

Collagen FAQ

Is collagen halal or kosher? Marine collagen is made from fish. Bovine collagen is from cattle; whether it is halal or kosher certified depends on the brand – check the label or call us and we will read it for you.

Is there a vegan collagen? No. Collagen only comes from animals. Some "vegan collagen" products are vitamin C and amino acid mixes; we do not stock any.

Collagen or whey protein? They are different. Whey is a complete protein for muscle and general protein needs (see whey protein in Malta). Collagen is taken for its own sake at a smaller dose.

Can I take collagen while pregnant or with medication? Ask your doctor or pharmacist first.
